THROWBACK SERIES: EUROPE (Amsterdam, Brussels, Bruges, Ghent)

SUMMER TRIP 2022: JULY 17TH – JULY 30TH

Day 1: The journey began with our travelers meeting at New York’s JFK airport and flying to Amsterdam, Netherlands. The excitement of the trip ahead kept everyone energized despite the long flight. Arriving in Amsterdam on Day 1, the group quickly checked into their hotel, eager to begin their exploration of this historic and vibrant city.

Day 2: The group would meet each morning for breakfast in the hotel, to gear up for the day ahead. We set out to take a leisurely stroll along the iconic canals of Amsterdam. The tranquil waters and the charming canal houses provided a perfect backdrop for their walk. We marveled at the quaint houseboats and the vibrant life along the waterways. The day concluded with an early dinner at a cozy local café, where we sampled traditional Dutch dishes and shared their excitement for the days ahead.

Day 3: Day three was dedicated to delving into the rich artistic heritage of the Netherlands. The first stop was the renowned Rijksmuseum, where the group spent hours admiring masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and other Dutch masters. The Van Gogh Museum followed, offering an intimate glimpse into the life and works of Vincent van Gogh. The vivid colors and emotive brushstrokes left a lasting impression on everyone. Dinner at the Hard Rock Café provided a lively contrast to the day’s cultural immersion, with its rock memorabilia and energetic atmosphere. Our travelers sure do love a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe!

Day 4: The following day, the group ventured out of Amsterdam to the picturesque village of Zaanse Schans. Here, we explored the charming windmills, some of which dated back to the 17th century. The visit included a tour of a wooden clog workshop and a cheese factory, where we learned about traditional Dutch crafts and sampled delicious local cheeses. The day continued with visits to the idyllic towns of Monnickendam and Broek, each offering their own unique charm and history.

Day 5: Day five brought a mix of history and modernity with visits to the Heineken Brewery and the Anne Frank Huis. At the brewery, the group enjoyed an interactive tour that culminated in a tasting session, where we learned about the history and brewing process of one of the world’s most famous beers. The visit to the Anne Frank Huis was a somber and poignant experience, as they walked through the secret annex and reflected on the powerful story of Anne Frank and her family.

Day 6: On the sixth day, the group experienced Amsterdam from a different perspective with a river cruise along the city’s canals. The leisurely cruise offered stunning views of the city’s architecture and landmarks, as well as a glimpse into everyday life in Amsterdam. The peacefulness of the water and the beauty of the surroundings made it a highlight of our stay.

Day 7: Marked the beginning of our journey to Belgium. We made several coastal stops along the way, enjoying the scenic landscapes and quaint seaside towns. The beauty of the Belgian coast, with it’s sandy beaches and charming promenades, provided a delightful transition from the bustling streets of Amsterdam to the historical cities of Belgium.

Day 8: Arriving in Brussels, the group used the city as a base to explore other parts of Belgium. We visited the charming town of Delft, known for it’s blue and white pottery, and The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government and home to the International Court of Justice. In Brussels, we admired the grandeur of the Grand Place and enjoyed the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

Day 9: This day was devoted to a comprehensive tour of Brussels. We visited iconic landmarks such as the Atomium, the Royal Palace, and the Manneken Pis statue. The group indulged in Belgian waffles and chocolates, exploring the city’s many culinary delights. The day ended with a visit to the bustling European Quarter, where we gained insight into the workings of the European Union.

Day 10: The group traveled to Dinant, a picturesque town nestled along the Meuse River. We marveled at the stunning cliffs and the imposing Citadel of Dinant, which offered panoramic views of the surrounding area. The town’s charming streets and riverside cafes provided a perfect setting for a relaxing afternoon.

Day 11: The journey continued to Ghent on Day 11, where the group explored the medieval architecture and vibrant cultural scene. We visited Gravensteen Castle, strolled along the Graslei and Korenlei, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere of this university town. The mix of history and modernity in Ghent made it a fascinating destination.

Day 12: On day twelve, we brought the group to Bruges, often referred to as the Venice of the North. We wandered through the cobblestone streets, admiring the well-preserved medieval buildings and tranquil canals. A boat tour of the canals provided a unique perspective of this fairy-tale city. The day ended with a visit to a local brewery, where we sampled traditional Belgian beers.

Day 13: On our penultimate day, the group enjoyed a chocolate tour in Brussels. We visited several chocolatiers, learning about the history and production of Belgian chocolate. The tour concluded with a farewell dinner at a renowned restaurant, where everyone reminisced about the wonderful experiences and shared their favorite moments of the trip.

Day 14: This marked the end of our European adventure. The group boarded our flight from Brussels back to New York’s JFK, carrying with them unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of the Netherlands and Belgium. The trip had been a perfect blend of history, art, and culinary delights, leaving everyone eager for their next Frontier Travel Club adventure!
