THROWBACK SERIES: ENGLAND & NORWAY

SUMMER TRIP 2023 (LAND & SEA): JULY 2ND – JULY 15TH

Day 1: The journey began with a flight to London. We departed from either New York’s JFK or Lisbon, depending on whether everyone had participated in the preceding tour. Anticipation filled the air as everyone prepared for the adventures ahead.

Day 2: Upon arrival at London Heathrow, the group made our way into the city. The excitement of being in one of the world’s most vibrant capitals was palpable. We checked into their hotel and, after a brief rest, ventured out to explore. The iconic red buses, bustling streets, and historic landmarks immediately captured everyone’s imagination. Covent Garden’s lively atmosphere, the grandeur of Trafalgar Square, and the eclectic shops of Oxford Street provided a wonderful introduction to London.

Day 3: The third day was dedicated to some of London’s most famous landmarks. The day started with a visit to Tower Bridge, where we marveled at the views from the high-level walkways. Next, we headed to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, taking in the Gothic architecture and the chimes of the famous clock. At Buckingham Palace, we witnessed the Changing of the Guard, a quintessentially British ceremony. The London Eye offered a breathtaking panorama of the city, followed by a serene visit to Westminster Abbey, where we learned about its royal history and significant events.

Day 4: The fourth day saw the group venturing outside of London to visit Stonehenge. The ancient stone circle, shrouded in mystery and history, was awe-inspiring. We learned about its significance and the various theories regarding its origins. Following Stonehenge, we visited other nearby ancient sites, each offering a glimpse into Britain’s prehistoric past. The journey through these ancient landscapes provided a stark contrast to the modernity of London.

Day 5: On the fifth day, we headed to the seaside town of Bournemouth. The beautiful beaches and the Victorian architecture of the town offered a relaxing respite from the previous days’ busy schedule. We strolled along the pier, enjoyed the local seafood, and explored the town’s gardens. Bournemouth’s charm and slower pace provided a perfect setting for unwinding.

Day 6: Day six marked the beginning of their maritime adventure on Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas . The group traveled to Southampton, where we boarded a luxurious cruise ship. The excitement was palpable as we embarked on out journey through the Norwegian fjords. As the ship set sail, passengers explored the amenities on board, enjoyed our nightly group dinner in the formal dining room, and relaxed, anticipating the days ahead at sea.

Day 7: The seventh day was spent entirely at sea. Sea days are a way for all of us to relax, take it easy, and recoup our energy for more to come. We took advantage of the ship’s facilities, enjoying the pool, spa, and various entertainment options. Some attended lectures about Norwegian culture and history, while others simply relaxed on deck, taking in the vast expanse of the ocean. It was a day of leisure and anticipation for the upcoming destinations.

Day 8: On the eighth day, the ship docked in Bergen, Norway. Known for it’s picturesque harbor and colorful wooden houses, Bergen did not disappoint. The travelers explored Bryggen, the historic wharf area, and took the funicular to Mount Fløyen for panoramic views of the city. The day was spent wandering through the charming streets, visiting local markets, and soaking up the unique atmosphere of this beautiful Norwegian city.

Day 9: The ninth day brought the travelers to Olden, a small village surrounded by stunning natural beauty. We embarked on excursions to see the Briksdal Glacier, hiking through lush valleys and past cascading waterfalls. The pristine landscapes and the sheer majesty of the glacier were unforgettable highlights. The serenity and untouched beauty of Olden provided a deep sense of connection with nature.

Day 10: Geiranger was the destination for the tenth day. The famous Geirangerfjord, with its dramatic cliffs and thundering waterfalls, was a sight to behold. The group took a boat tour through the fjord, marveling at the Seven Sisters Waterfall and the Suitor. Some opted for a hike up to the viewpoint at Flydalsjuvet, while others explored the quaint village. The day was filled with awe-inspiring scenery and the raw power of nature.

Day 11: On the eleventh day, the ship arrived in Haugesund. Known as the birthplace of Norway, Haugesund offered a mix of history and natural beauty. The group visited Haraldshaugen, the national monument commemorating the unification of Norway, and strolled through the charming streets of the town. We also explored the surrounding landscapes, including the picturesque coastal areas and nearby islands. The rich history and scenic beauty of Haugesund left a lasting impression.

Day 12: Another day at sea on the twelfth day allowed the travelers to relax and reflect on their journey so far. They enjoyed the ship’s amenities, participated in various onboard activities, and shared their experiences with fellow travelers. The tranquil day provided a perfect balance to the busy days of exploration.

Day 13: The thirteenth day marked the end of the cruise as the ship docked back in Southampton. The travelers disembarked and made their way back to London. The journey back offered time to reminisce about the incredible sights and experiences of the past week. Upon arriving in London, we had some free time to explore more of the city or simply relax before our journey home.

Day 14: The final day, the group prepared for their return journey to New York. We traveled to London Heathrow and boarded our flight back to JFK. As the plane took off, we looked back on their adventure, filled with memories of ancient sites, stunning natural beauty, and the vibrant cultures they had encountered along the way. The journey had come to an end, but the experiences and friendships formed would last a lifetime.
