Exploring Iceland: A Journey Through Nature’s Wonders

Day 1: In the evening of April 1st, 2022, Frontier Travel Club departed from New York’s JFK Airport, filled with excitement for the adventure ahead. Our destination was Reykjavik, Iceland, a land renowned for its natural beauty and unique landscapes. The flight, a relatively short journey of just five and a half hours, was comfortable and filled with anticipation.

Day 2: We arrived in Reykjavik early in the morning, greeted by the crisp Icelandic air. Our first destination was the city of Reykjavik itself. We headed directly from the airport to the heart of the city, eager to explore. Reykjavik, with it’s vibrant cultural scene and picturesque streets, welcomed us warmly. We toured the city, visiting landmarks like Hallgrímskirkja Church and Harpa Concert Hall, and enjoyed the charming blend of old and new architecture. The city’s lively atmosphere and friendly locals made for a delightful introduction to Iceland.

Day 3: On the third day, we ventured to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature” because of its diverse landscapes. The tour took us through dramatic coastlines, volcanic craters, and quaint fishing villages. The highlight was the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier, an awe-inspiring sight that left us in awe. The natural beauty of the peninsula, with its rugged terrain and breathtaking vistas, was a photographer’s dream.

Day 4: The fourth day was dedicated to the famous Golden Circle. Our journey began with a visit to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. We then marveled at the powerful Geysir geothermal area, watching the Strokkur geyser erupt every few minutes. Our next stop was the stunning Gullfoss waterfall, where we felt the mist from the cascading water. For lunch, we visited a local dairy farm, where we enjoyed a hearty meal and a fascinating presentation on Icelandic dairy farming practices.

Day 5: The fifth day took us along Iceland’s scenic South Coast. We visited several breathtaking waterfalls, including Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, each unique and captivating. One of the most memorable stops was Sólheimasandur beach, where the wreckage of a DC airplane lay abandoned, providing a stark contrast against the black sand. The combination of natural beauty and intriguing history made the South Coast an unforgettable experience.

Day 6: Continuing our exploration of the South Coast, we visited the spectacular Glacier Lagoon on the sixth day. Here, we watched icebergs break off from the glacier and float serenely in the lagoon, creating a scene of otherworldly beauty. Just nearby was Diamond Beach, where glistening ice chunks scattered across the black sand like diamonds. The juxtaposition of ice and sand was mesmerizing and left us with lasting memories of Iceland’s natural wonders.

Day 7: Our journey then took us to Eastern Iceland. The landscape changed as we traveled, revealing the country’s diverse terrain. A highlight of the day was Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall. The sheer force and magnitude of the water were awe-inspiring, making it a standout moment of our trip. The rugged beauty of Eastern Iceland, less frequented by tourists, offered a sense of tranquility and raw natural power.

Day 8: On day eight, we toured Northern Iceland, with Akureyri as our base. This charming town, often called the “Capital of North Iceland,” provided a cozy atmosphere with its colorful houses and vibrant culture. We explored the northern coast, stopping at several beautiful locations along the way. Highlights included the serene Goðafoss waterfall and the stunning Lake Mývatn area, known for its geothermal activity and unique landscapes.

Day 9: As our journey neared its end, we traveled back to Reykjavik, making several amazing stops along the way. The day culminated with a visit to the Blue Lagoon, a world-famous geothermal spa. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters while surrounded by a surreal lava field was the perfect way to relax after our adventurous tour. In the evening, we enjoyed a farewell dinner, reminiscing about the incredible experiences we had shared over the past days.

Day 10: On the tenth day, we bid farewell to Iceland and boarded our flight back to New York City. Our mid-day arrival in JFK marked the end of an unforgettable journey. Reflecting on the trip, we felt grateful for the opportunity to explore such a unique and beautiful country. Iceland, with its stunning landscapes and warm-hearted people, had left an indelible mark on us.
