SUMMER TRIP 2024: JUNE 23RD – JULY 6TH
Day 1: Our journey began with a flight to Edmonton, Alberta, on June 23, 2024, signaling the start of an unforgettable adventure through the Canadian Rockies and beyond. As we landed in Edmonton, the excitement was palpable. Though our time in Edmonton would be brief, we knew it would leave a lasting impression.
Day two saw us exploring the city’s highlights, beginning with a visit to the Edmonton River Valley. This vast network of parkland, forests, and pathways provided a peaceful retreat from the urban environment. Altogether, took in the scenic beauty of the North Saskatchewan River, winding through the valley, and marveled at the green space that seemed to go on forever. From there, we headed to the West Edmonton Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the world. It was like a mini-city, complete with a waterpark, amusement park, ice rink, and endless stores. From there, we spent hours exploring its many attractions. All while taking full advantage of the variety of entertainment options available.
On day three, we left the city behind and headed toward Jasper National Park. The drive into the park was breathtaking, as the towering peaks of the Canadian Rockies began to rise around us. Jasper itself was a beautiful, with vast wilderness stretching in every direction. Further, we spent the day hiking along trails, taking in the stunning landscapes, and encountering wildlife like elk and mountain goats. The pristine beauty of Jasper National Park, left us in awe.
The next day, we embarked on the Columbia Icefields Tour. This was one of the most anticipated parts of our trip. To begin with, we took a ride on the massive Ice Explorer bus. Then, we journeyed out onto the Athabasca Glacier, part of the Columbia Icefield. The icy expanse beneath our feet felt otherworldly, and the cold, crisp air filled our lungs as we stood on the glacier. We learned about the glacier’s formation and the impact of climate change on these incredible natural wonders. Undeniably, walking on the glacier itself was an experience we would never forget. It offered a rare opportunity to connect with one of nature’s great marvels.
By and large, on day five we traveled south toward Banff. We made several stops along the way to admire the majestic Rocky Mountains. Surely, each stop provided a new vantage point, offering incredible views of snow-capped peaks and alpine meadows. Finally, by the time we arrived in Banff, we were fully immersed in the grandeur of the Rockies. Banff’s small-town charm, nestled within the mountains, made it the perfect base for our adventures over the next few days.
Then, day six took us to the stunning Moraine Lake. Surrounded by towering peaks and fed by glaciers, Moraine Lake was unlike anything we had seen before. The vibrant turquoise waters glistened under the sunlight, creating a picture-perfect scene. Further, we took leisurely walks around the lake, soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. A few of us even ventured out in canoes, paddling across the glassy surface, though we quickly learned that the glacial waters were frigid. The sheer beauty and tranquility of Moraine Lake left a lasting impact on all of us.
The following day, we made our way to Lake Louise, another iconic destination in Banff National Park. Like Moraine Lake, the beauty of Lake Louise was unmatched. The emerald waters, backed by the towering Victoria Glacier, created a postcard-perfect image. We spent time exploring the lakeshore, marveling at the beauty of the surrounding mountains. Some of us opted for a peaceful canoe ride, while others chose to hike the nearby trails, all of us captivated by the stunning scenery.
On day eight, we explored more of Banff National Park and enjoyed a relaxing visit to the famous Banff Upper Hot Springs. Soaking in the natural hot springs, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, was the perfect way to unwind after days of hiking and exploration. The warm waters, with temperatures reaching over 100°F, provided a rejuvenating experience that left us feeling refreshed and ready for the next leg of our journey.
The next day, we embarked on a scenic drive to Kamloops, British Columbia, leaving the mountains behind as we descended into the lower valleys. The changing landscapes along the way—from rugged mountain terrain to rolling hills and wide rivers—kept us in awe throughout the journey. Kamloops, known for its beautiful setting along the Thompson River, offered a peaceful stopover before we continued to the vibrant city of Vancouver.
After Kamloops and the Thompson River, we arrived in Vancouver. A city known for its breathtaking views of both mountains and the sea. Indeed, the city’s skyline, set against the backdrop of the North Shore Mountains, was simply stunning. After, we spent the next few days exploring Vancouver’s most iconic sights. Following, on day 11, we ventured to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. We crossed the famous suspension bridge that swayed high above the forested canyon. Indeed, the treetop walk and cliffside views provided a thrilling experience, allowing us to immerse ourselves in Vancouver’s natural beauty.
Following, on day twelve saw us visiting Whistler Resort, a world-renowned destination for outdoor adventures. Even in summer, Whistler was bustling with activity, and we took the opportunity to ride the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, offering incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The resort town had a lively atmosphere, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and scenic spots to explore.
Then, on day thirteen, we returned to Vancouver to visit Stanley Park, a massive urban park that offered endless opportunities for exploration. We walked along the seawall, taking in views of the city skyline, the ocean, and the surrounding forests. Granville Island, with its public market and artisanal shops, was our next stop. We enjoyed browsing through the market’s offerings, from fresh produce to unique crafts, and indulged in some delicious local treats.
Finally, on day fourteen, our two-week adventure came to an end. For those of us traveling home, we bid farewell to Vancouver, flying back with countless memories of our time in Alberta and British Columbia. For others, the journey continued to Seattle and beyond, but the beauty of the Canadian Rockies and the charm of Vancouver would remain with us long after the trip ended. The trip through the mountains of Alberta and British Columbia had been nothing short of spectacular, leaving us with a deep appreciation for the natural wonders of this incredible region.
